Do UAE Residents Need a Schengen Visa for Malta?

It decides your passport, not where you live. If you’re a Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Northern Emirates resident with a visa-required passport, you’ll need a Malta Schengen visa before your flight – that means the vast majority of Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Nigerian and Bangladeshi passport holders. Living in the UAE doesn’t waive anything. It only decides where you apply.

Plenty of people ask, “Is a UAE resident visa required for Malta?” The answer is yes. You apply from the UAE as a legal resident, and your residence permit has to stay valid well beyond your return date.

Expat Residents vs. Visa-Exempt Passports

The following nationalities do not require a visa to stay in Malta for up to 90 days within a 180-day period:

  • Emirates
  • British
  • US
  • Canadian
  • Australian passport holders

If your passport is on that list, you can skip this guide. If it’s not, keep reading. Where you work or how long you’ve lived in Dubai makes no difference to the rule.

Do You Need a Visa for Mediterranean Cruises Stopping in Malta?

Usually, yes. If your ship docks at Valletta and you step off, you’re entering the Schengen Area, and visa-required passports are treated the same as for a flight. Some cruise lines have their own paperwork checks too. Sort this out before you book the cabin, because the cruise fare won’t be refunded if boarding is refused.

Malta Student & English Language Course Visas (Short-Stay C vs. National D)

Malta is a big English-language-school destination. Stays under 90 days fall under the Type C short-stay visa handled by the Maltese Embassy or Consulate, while 91 days or more need a Type D national visa through Identità. A two-to-four-week summer course is a Type C case. A semester-long programme isn’t, and we don’t process long-stay study visas. Message us on WhatsApp with your course dates, and we’ll tell you which route you’re on.

Types of Malta Visas Available for UAE Residents

The type of Malta visa you should apply for varies according to the reason for your visit. With the applicability of different visas, you can apply from the UAE for the following Malta visas.

Tourist Visa (Type C Short-Stay)

This is the standard Malta Schengen visa. This visa is valid for a period of 90 days in 180 days, and you can enter the Schengen area for the duration of the time. You will get a single-entry visa if you are first time applicants until the date to begin travelling. Repeat Schengen travellers with a clean record sometimes get multiple entry.

Business & Family Visit Visas

Both are still Type C visas, with an invitation attached. For business trips, the Maltese company issues an invitation letter on its letterhead stating the purpose of your visit and the dates. For a family or friend visit, the host in Malta writes the invitation, adds an ID copy, and includes a copy of their residence permit if they aren’t an EEA national.

You will be allowed to travel for meetings, trade fairs, conferences and customer negotiations with a business visa. You will not be allowed to work in Malta, have a job in Malta, or be paid by a Maltese employer. The consulate will scrutinise that borderline carefully so the cover letter needs to explain “just visiting”.

National Long-Term Visas (Type D) & Scope Exclusions

Work, long-term study, reunification and anything over 90 days are all routed through the national Type D channel, which is controlled by Identità in Malta. Odit Travel handles tourist and business short-stay visas only. We don’t process work or employment visas, so if that’s what you need, a licensed Malta-based adviser is the right call.

Where and How to Apply: VFS Global Dubai etc. High Commission Rules

The residents of the UAE may fill up the Malta visa application form and submit it in the office of VFS Global in Dubai as per the guidelines of the concerned Maltese mission, document checklist and procedures of booking appointments.

VFS Malta Dubai (WAFI Mall) & VFS Abu Dhabi Locations

The Malta visa application centre in Dubai sits in WAFI City, Umm Hurair 2. It’s the usual submission point for residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates. In Abu Dhabi, the centre is in The Mall at the World Trade Centre, and it serves Abu Dhabi and Al Ain residents. Submission is in person only. You can’t post your passport in.

Here’s what changes with us in the picture: we handle the booking, the form, the document file and the tracking. You show up once, with your passport, for biometrics.

High Commission of Malta in Abu Dhabi: Jurisdiction & Decision Rules

VFS only collects your documents and fingerprints. It doesn’t decide anything. Only the Maltese authorities do that, and they have the right to request additional documents or interview you if there are inconsistencies in your file.

This is the sort of thing where quality wins over quantity. A thin file which presents a clear and consistent story is better than a thick file which does not.

The 6-Month Booking Window & Processing Timeline Rules

You may also apply for a visa up to six months in advance of your trip (but no less than 15 days in advance). Realistically, the safe window is four to eight weeks ahead. Most Malta visa processing times in Dubai land around 15 calendar days after submission. Summer, Christmas and Eid periods push it longer, sometimes to 45 days, because everyone is applying at once. If someone asks how long it takes to get a Malta visa, “plan for a month” is the honest answer.

Step-by-Step: How to Book & Attend Your VFS Malta Dubai Appointment

Follow these easy steps below to apply for your Malta visa, book your VFS appointment, provide biometrics and track your passport online.

Step 1: Completing the Official Malta Schengen Application Form

Your Malta visa application will need to be submitted in the official Schengen form, and every detail will need to be a perfect match for your passport and supporting documents. Names, dates, employer, travel dates. One mismatch can delay a decision. Our team completes the online application and form for you from the information you give us, then you check and sign it.

Step 2: Securing Your VFS Malta Appointment Slot

Slots for Malta can be scarce, especially before summer. Odit Travel books your Malta visa appointment in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, so you don’t spend evenings refreshing a portal. If slots are full, we watch for new releases and cancellations and move quickly when they appear.

Step 3: Biometrics (Fingerprints) & Submission at WAFI Mall

On the day, you go to the centre with your passport. The staff will scan your fingerprints and photo and verify your file and will also collect the fee. The visit itself is short. Because the file has already been checked by us beforehand, there’s rarely anything left to fix at the counter.

Step 4: Tracking Your Passport & Courier Delivery

Once your application is lodged, you get a reference number, and your Malta visa tracking begins. We monitor the status and let you know the moment anything changes, whether that’s a decision, a request for more documents, or your passport coming back by courier or ready for collection.

Mandatory Document Checklist for Malta Visa Application

Have your documents to hand for your Malta visa application. From your passport and bank statements to travel bookings and insurance.

Passport & UAE Residence Visa Rules (The 3-Month Rule)

Your passport must be valid for 3 months after the expiry date of the visa, and your UAE residence visa should be valid 90 days after the return date. That’s the 3-month rule. The passport also needs blank pages and should be fairly recent.

If your residence permit is about to expire, renew it before you apply.

Financial Requirements: 3-Month Certified Bank Statements

Consular officers prefer to see three months of bank statements with stamps confirming the income and a healthy balance, which is to cover your experience. Large deposits just before application without explanation are the classic red flag. We’ll have a look at your bank statements first and be honest about whether anything needs an explanation or the time doesn’t add up.

Employer NOC Letter or UAE Trade License

Employees need a No Objection Certificate stating your position, salary, and approved leave dates. Business owners need a valid trade licence and company documents instead. Either way, you can see it gives you a reason to return to the UAE, exactly what the consulate is looking for.

Flight Reservations, Hotel Bookings & Malta Travel Itinerary

Your plan of your flights, hotel and each day should be well prepared and coordinated with each other and with your leave dates. Dates that don’t match are one of the most common reasons for questions. We prepare a verifiable itinerary and reservations so you aren’t paying for non-refundable tickets before the visa is approved.

Travel Medical Insurance Cover (€30,000 Minimum)

You need Schengen-valid health insurance with at least €30,000 coverage for the entire period of the visa. Check the dates. A policy that starts a day late or ends a day early will cause trouble. We arrange compliant cover as part of the file.

Specific Document Rules for Minors & Language School Students

Children travelling to Malta need a birth certificate, written consent from both parents or legal guardians, and copies of the parents’ passport pages. If only one parent travels, the consent letter matters even more. For those taking the short English course, you will require an enrolment or acceptance letter from the school. You will also require proof of fee payment. These files are where most little mistakes happen, so let us handle them.

Official Malta Visa Fees & Processing Times

Understand the Malta visa fees, VFS service charges, expected processing times, and Odit Travel assistance fees before you apply.

Embassy Fees & VFS Service Charges Breakdown

The Schengen fee is €90 for adults, with reduced or waived rates for young children under the standard Schengen rules. Then comes the VFS service charge, which is non-refundable even if your visa is refused. Both are paid at the centre on the day. We confirm the exact AED totals with you before your appointment so there are no surprises at the counter.

Odit Travel Assistance Packages (Starting AED 850)

Odit Travel Malta file assistance starts from AED 850. That covers the form, the appointment booking, document review and preparation, the cover letter and itinerary, and tracking through to passport return. Official visa and VFS charges are separate, and we spell out the full total before you commit.

5 Common Mistakes That Lead to Malta Visa Refusals

  1. Weak or inconsistent finances. Statements that don’t match the stated income or sudden deposits with no explanation.
  2. An itinerary that doesn’t add up. Hotel dates that don’t match flights or a plan that contradicts your leave letter.
  3. Wrong insurance. Coverage under €30,000, or dates that don’t cover the whole trip.
  4. Applying too late. A residence permit is about to expire, or a travel date is too close to allow normal processing.
  5. Small form errors. A name spelt differently from the passport, a missing signature, or an employer detail that doesn’t match the NOC.

None of these are exotic. They’re ordinary slips, and they cost you a non-refundable fee.

Refusal Appeals: The 15-Day Rule to Challenge a Malta Visa Rejection

After a refusal, you have 15 days from the date of notification to appeal. The appeal goes to the Immigration Appeals Board in Valletta, costs €120 per application, and must be lodged in person or through a representative. You attach the refusal letter and supporting documents, which must be certified true copies by a lawyer or notary.

Honestly, an appeal isn’t always the best move. If the refusal boils down to a rectifiable weakness, a better fresh application is often quicker. Either way, those 15 days go by so quickly, so get us on the line the second you receive that refusal letter. We read through it with you and help you determine which course is right for you.

How Odit Travel Prevents Refusals & Builds Strong Files

We check the file against what the consulate actually looks at before it’s submitted. That means testing the story across your documents, spotting contradictions, and telling you plainly if the timing is wrong. We’d rather delay your application a week than see you lose the fee.

Generally no. Malta expects applicants to be legal UAE residents, and a short visit visa is usually not accepted. Send us a message describing your circumstance, and we will advise you on what is feasible.

If you hold a visa-required passport and plan to step off the ship, usually yes. Check with the cruise line and with us before booking.

If your child holds a visa-required passport, yes. Courses under 90 days use the Type C visa, and we’ll prepare the school letter, parental consent and the rest of the file.
