If you live in Dubai on a visa-required passport, you must apply for your Japan visa through VFS Global at WAFI Mall (Level 2, Falcon Phase 2), as the Consulate-General of Japan no longer processes regular applications in person.
(Skip the hassle: Odit Travel handles your entire Japan visa application—including appointment booking, document checks, itinerary creation, and submission—for AED 900).
If you live in Dubai on a passport that isn’t visa-exempt, you need a visa for Japan, which can be obtained via VFS Global at WAFI Mall. You will receive the Japanese visa in the form of a passport sticker or e-Visa on your phone. As of 1 August 2024, the Japanese Consulate-General no longer processes regular applications in person at the consulate, so you can no longer simply turn up there.
Expect a decision within around 8-10 working days with a full application submission, and some applications take 3 to 4 weeks, and most of the pain in applying for a Japanese visa is related to paperwork, not your ability to qualify. Below we reveal who actually requires a visa, which has the most appropriate one for your visit, how the e-Visa and the sticker vary, what you need for your file, what it expenses and the tiny blunders that cause Dubai applications to get turned down.
Short on time? Odit Travel handles your whole Japan visa application, from booking the appointment to submitting your file, for AED 900. Message us with your nationality and travel dates, and we’ll tell you exactly what you need.

It doesn’t matter where you live – your passport does. Japan’s visa-free list is a nationality-based table, so 10 years in Dubai doesn’t matter. With Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Nigerian citizens (as well as many other nationalities) requiring a visa prior to travel, your passport has the last word.
Here is one caveat to remember: VFS only accepts applications no more than 90 days in advance.
You don’t need a visa to come to Japan as a UAE passport holder or as a citizen of a bunch of other countries, such as the UK, most of Europe, America, Canada, Australia, Singapore… And if you can use some of those countries, as not having to obtain a visa, having that passport and a good salary or a few years in the UAE won’t save you from applying. And check which country you’re from on the exemption page on the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs – if it’s on there, you need not read any further.
Not sure which side you’re on? Message Odit Travel with your passport nationality, and we’ll confirm it for you.
Can You Submit with a UAE Visit Visa?
No. To apply through VFS Dubai, you should be a valid UAE resident, and your UAE residence visa should be valid for a minimum of 30 days after your return from Japan. It cannot be a tourist or visit visa or a once-expired UAE residence visa.
If you’re only in Dubai as a visitor, you must submit from your country of residence.
There are a few different types of visas available for residents of the UAE for those travelling to Japan. Determining which one you need depends on your reason for travel and your frequency of return.
This is the tourist visa that most of you are probably interested in. It enables you to visit friends and family, go sightseeing or take short trips. It is issued for a number of days that are determined by the consulate and are usually 15 or 30 days.
It is usually a single-entry visa but can also be issued for multiple entries. However, all double-entry visas are converted into single-entry visas by the consular officer. You will need an itinerary of your trip, financial support, and proof of an intention to return, such as a work or business license.
Families can apply for the tourist visa together, but each family member still needs his or her own set of documents.
You may also plan to visit friends or relatives in Japan. This is entirely different from tourism and has a different checklist but can still be counted as part of a sightseeing trip when you apply for a visa – you will still need a letter of invitation from your friend or family in Japan.
Japan does give multi-year, multiple-entry visas, but you can’t buy one with a bigger bank balance. The consulate decides, and the categories are tighter than most people assume. Indian passport holders in the UAE have their own multi-entry list on VFS’s website.
For others, a steady income, a long time living in the UAE, a positive travel history (especially Japan or similar countries) and, depending on your citizenship and circumstances, Golden Visa status help. For a multi-year permit, start the file from day one with salary certificates, a longer set of bank statements and previous travel stamps in Japan. And remember, as with many countries, a first-time application may be granted as a single entry.
A business visa is suitable for visits for meetings, exhibitions, trade negotiations, or short-term business trips. You require an invitation or guarantee from the company in Japan, as well as a letter from your company in the UAE. It doesn’t let you work for a Japanese company. Work visas are a different animal: the employer sponsors them, and they run through Japanese immigration.
Transiting on a longer layover When you’re just transiting and staying airside, a visa usually isn’t required. However, should you decide to leave the airport on a longer layover and you have a visa-requiring passport, you would require a short-term visa.
Both processes begin with VFS Global in the UAE. The catch is what you get at the end: a digital Visa Issuance Notice that you need to display from your phone or the traditional sticker in your passport. Before you settle on a date, verify which one the consulate is accepting now for your nationality and visa type – it’s been amended more than once.
The benefit of an e-Visa is you don’t have to drop your passport off at the end. You still need to check in your documents and go to VFS for the in-person portion, but once your visa is approved, you will receive an approval notice instead of a sticker. That document is then shown at the Japan border, often by smartphone or tablet, alongside your passport. The e-Visa is for tourism and sightseeing only. Visiting relatives or acquaintances follows a separate checklist and isn’t covered by it.
Great for travellers who are not comfortable dropping their passport for a week and have a well-powered, modern phone. It doesn’t suit people who aren’t comfortable carrying digital proof or whose nationality or visa type falls outside the e-Visa scheme.
The Global Sticker visa is a classic route and is scheduled for an appointment at WAFI Mall, Level 2, Falcon Phase 2, Umm Hurair 2, Dubai. You will have to submit all the following original and required copies: Original passport application form with a glued photograph and supporting documents. Your passport is returned with a sticker once approved.
Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah residents may apply in Dubai. Residents of Abu Dhabi are directed to apply at the VFS centre in Abu Dhabi instead.

What you receive | Visa Issuance Notice (digital) | Sticker in your passport |
Passport held during processing | Depends on the route; confirm at the appointment. | Yes, until the decision. |
What you carry to Japan | Passport plus notice on phone or tablet | Passport with sticker |

Best for | Travellers comfortable with digital proof | Anyone who prefers a physical visa or isn’t eligible for an e-Visa |
Both options use the same documents and the same financial scrutiny. Choosing one over the other won’t make an approval more likely.
Check Your Japan Visa Eligibility
The application itself is simple. What takes time is assembling a file that survives a document check on the first attempt.
Here’s how a Japan visa application runs in Dubai, from start to finish. Odit Travel handles every step below for you, so there are no appointments to book and no forms to fill in on your own.
Your place of residence determines which centre you should apply to. Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah residents should apply at Dubai centre. Abu Dhabi residents should apply at Abu Dhabi centre. If you apply at the wrong centre, your application may be refused at the counter, and your appointment will be lost.
We check your Emirates ID and residence visa to confirm the right centre and that your residence stays valid for at least 30 days after your return date. If it expires sooner, we’ll tell you to renew it before anything is lodged.
VFS provides a predetermined format for the itinerary, and that is what the consulate expects you to write on it for each day of your stay: City, activity, hotel name & address and contact number if possible. Arrival and departure dates should be the same as on your flight tickets.
Just a few lines per day will suffice, but fill in each day. The blank days, ‘free day’ entries throughout the entire trip, or reservations that don’t correspond to your bookings are often the major delay. Odit Travel prepares the itinerary for you and checks it against your hotel bookings, flights and leave letter.
Book appointments on the VFS Global Japan page for the UAE. Applications that can be submitted by yourself or an agent. You must provide the original Emirates ID at the counter. Your application must be lodged within 90 days of your proposed travel date, and no sooner.
At the counter, the officer looks at your documents, then accepts them. If there’s a problem, he or she will let you know, and you can often fix the issue that day or return with the paper. You will pay the visa fee and service fee and will be given a receipt. Don’t lose it! You’ll use it to track your application and to pick up your passport.
“Skip the legwork: Every step above is something Odit Travel does for you. Send us your documents, and we’ll handle the rest, appointment included.”
The required documents do vary a little by category and nationality, so always double-check with the checklist page on VFS before your appointment. The most common documents required for applicants from the UAE are listed below.
Note: Not sure your file is complete? Odit Travel’s visa team can review your documents against the current VFS checklist before you book your appointment.
All applications should provide an original passport with at least 6 months validity after the intended period of stay with at least two blank pages and a passport copy of the data page. The signed, completed application form must have one recent passport photograph affixed to it of size 45mm x 35mm. The applicant must attach Emirates ID copy to the form (the original should be available at the centre) and proof of residence in the UAE for registration applications.
What other documents do you need?
Also necessary are confirmed flight reservations or the itinerary with entry and exit, the itinerary form and proof of accommodation during your stay.
If you’re visiting family or friends in Japan, an invitation letter from your host is also required.
For employed applicants, a no-objection or leave letter from the employer, addressed to the Consul-General of Japan in Dubai, confirming the position, monthly income and approval of leave dates. A copy of the trade licence of the employer is usually requested as well. Electronic bank statements covering the last three months, generated no more than 10 days before your application, round out the pack.
Some applicants also include salary certificates for added support.
Instead of the employer letter, business owners provide evidence of the nature of the business: a current valid trade licence, registration documents, and a letter on the company’s letterhead stating ownership and the reason for travelling.
Free zone licences are acceptable, though the documentation should confirm licence validity and operation. Personal and, where relevant, company bank statements for the last three months should be recent electronic copies, consistent with the income you declare.
Dependents rely on their sponsor’s documents. For this to include a copy of the passport, UAE residence visa, Emirates ID and a sponsor’s letter (or no-objection letter) plus the sponsor’s bank statements for the last three months.
If the sponsor isn’t travelling, then a support letter is required.
Housewives apply on their husband’s papers, also with marriage certificates if the husband’s and wife’s surnames do not match. Students include a letter from their school or university confirming attendance and leave approval.
Business visitors must have an invitation letter from the Japanese partner organisation, a guarantee letter from the Japanese side (if they are paying for the trip), a letter of the UAE company requesting the visit and a daily itinerary of meetings. Company registration details for both the UAE company and the Japanese inviting firm may also be requested.
This is where most applicants guess, and guessing is what leads to refusals. Japan doesn’t publish one fixed minimum balance for every traveller. The consulate will need you to prove you can support yourself financially while away and that your financial status is consistent with the income you have reported.
There is no officially published minimum figure, so it is better to assume that your balance should have enough to comfortably cover flights and stay, money for day-to-day expenses, plus some for unexpected expenses, and some for all who are travelling on the same file. Statements should be the bank’s last three months, stamped, signed and closing balance tallied with the salary credits.
Some examples that raise questions: a conversion jumps up just before you apply; the salary doesn’t reconcile with the amount on your employer letter. If there was a valid reason for a large deposit, put a brief cover note with your application.
Make the bar higher for a multi-year entry visa. Include your salary certificates, more extended statements wherever possible, documentation of your past trips overseas and proof of your stability in work or business.
Anticipate a clear story as to how often you anticipate being in Japan realistically. Focus on a good file as a normal traveller with strong connections to the UAE.
Our fee depends on the type of appointment, and Odit Travel confirms your total before we start.
Our Japan visa service is AED 900 for a normal appointment, or AED 1,500 if you want a prime time, premium or platinum appointment.
You send us your documents. We book the appointment, complete your forms, build your itinerary, check every paper and submit your file, so nothing gets missed and nothing is left for you to figure out.
The consulate’s standard processing period is 8-10 working days from submission to the earliest issuance, assuming the file is complete. Weekends and UAE public holidays don’t count. Some applications take 3 to 4 weeks. Incomplete files, requests for extra documents, and peak-season submissions around Golden Week, cherry blossom season, and Eid can push this out.
Both the e-Visa and the sticker Visa timelines are the same. So, don’t assume the e-Visa would save you any time. Remember to apply at least three to four weeks prior to your flight; do not book any non-refundable travel until you receive the response.
A majority of refusals and delays can be eliminated by addressing just a few preventable problems.
VFS Dubai asks for a 45mm by 35mm colour photo with a plain background, taken within the last six months. A UAE studio that defaults to a different passport size will give you the wrong print.
Odit Travel checks the size, the white background and the framing of your photo before anything is lodged, so a wrong print gets caught early.
An itinerary that reads “Tokyo sightseeing” for ten days plus nothing sounds pretty sketchy. A solid itinerary specifies the towns, the number of nights spent there and a plausible activity each day, with each date matching your hotel bookends and plane tickets. If a plan says you’re overnight in Kyoto but your booking says otherwise, expect an awkward question.
Odit Travel creates your itinerary and refers it to your bookings.
Statements printed from a banking app without a stamp are a frequent reason for files to be sent back. Ask your branch for stamped statements covering the full three months, and check the dates cover the period immediately before your application.
A balance that doesn’t cover your trip or that doesn’t match your claimed income is the other half of this problem. Odit Travel reviews your statements before submission, so both get caught early.
One wrong photo size, an out-of-date bank statement or an itinerary that doesn’t match your bookings can cost you an appointment and a week or more. Odit Travel is here, so that doesn’t happen to you.
Odit Travel handles the whole Japan visa process for you. We book your appointment, prepare your forms and itinerary, review your documents and financial proof against the current VFS checklist, and take care of the submission. Our visa service fee is AED 900 for a normal appointment and AED 1,500 for prime time, premium or platinum appointments. We work with Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian and other non-exempt residents every week, so we know where files get stuck.
Ready to start? Message Odit Travel with your nationality, job type and travel dates. We’ll tell you exactly what you need, confirm your total and take care of the rest, appointment included.
Yes, if you hold a valid UAE residence visa and live in an emirate covered by the Dubai centre. Applications go through VFS Global at WAFI Mall. Abu Dhabi residents apply in Abu Dhabi. Odit Travel can handle the whole application for you.
The Odit Travel visa service fee is AED 900 for a normal appointment and AED 1,500 for prime time, premium or platinum appointments. You can let us know your nationality and travel dates, and we will confirm the total with you.
You need your passport, a signed form with a 45×35 mm photo, an Emirates ID, a residence visa, a flight and hotel booking, a detailed itinerary, and three months of bank statements. Employed applicants add a leave and salary letter. Business owners add a trade licence. Odit Travel checks your file against the current checklist before it’s lodged.
The standard period is 8-10 working days from your application submission, and some applications take 3 to 4 weeks, as long as your file is complete. Missing documents and peak season can increase the time. Make sure you apply at least three to four weeks before your departure.
Send a message to Odit Travel with your travel dates, and we’ll inform you if you’re within the time frame.
It depends on your passport. Emirati citizens and holders of passports on Japan’s exemption list can enter without a visa for short stays. Most expat residents on South Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern and African passports do need one.
At the Japan Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global, WAFI Mall, Level 2, Falcon Phase 2, Umm Hurair 2, Dubai. Odit Travel books the appointment and handles the submission for you. The Consulate-General no longer accepts ordinary applications directly.
Three months, as electronic statements generated no more than 10 days before your application.
The closing balance should cover your trip costs and align with the income you’ve declared. Apps-only printouts without a bank stamp risk being returned.
Yes, but approval is at the consulate’s discretion. A strong income record, long UAE residence and prior travel history help. Be ready to receive a single-entry visa on your first application.
A residence visa alone isn’t enough unless your passport is visa-exempt. Visa-required nationalities must hold a Japanese visa as well. Your UAE residence must also stay valid for at least 30 days after your return.
Odit Travel handles it end to end. We book your VFS appointment, prepare the form and itinerary, check your photo and supporting documents, and submit the file. You supply your papers, and we take care of the rest.
In the UAE, through VFS Global’s Japan centres in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, depending on your emirate of residence. Outside the UAE, apply in your country of residence.
Odit Travel books the appointment for you. If you are eligible for the e-Visa, your actual visa will be returned electronically, but you will still need to submit in person to the centre. We will check if your nationality is eligible for an e-Visa before we book.
